Who is your Rat Race Pied Piper?

We all have our vices. And though we may agree, in theory, that it sure would be nice (or even ideal) to be able to make a living without giving so much of ourselves to a corporate employer... inertia is a powerful thing.

"Be realistic", we tell ourselves.

Well, here's a fun look at what might be keeping you, internally, tied to the rat race.

Pied Piper

Sammy Cynic:

  • "It's just another get rich quick scheme."
  • "It sounds too good to be true, so it probably is."
  • "It doesn't matter what I do - things won't change."
  • "I've tried this before, and it didn't work."
  • "I've been burned in the past."

Cynical Rat

Conservative Connie & Change-Me-Not Chad:

  • "I've never heard of it before."
  • "Most people I know aren't doing it."
  • "It sounds too risky."
  • "That is too different from what I'm used to."
  • "I don't want to lose what I have now."
  • "What will I tell people that I do, if I end up quitting my regular job?"

Old Fashioned

Priscilla Procrastination and Tommie Tomorrow.

  • "Let's wait to start until tomorrow."

Procrastinator

Busy Buddy and Frantic Fran.

  • "I don't have time right now."
  • "I already have too much on my plate - I can't be thinking about something new."
  • "We already have a game plan, and can't be distracted right now."

Frantic

Penniless Penny.

  • "I don't have any money to do anything right now."
  • "I have too much debt to think about anything else right now."

Poor Mouse

Penniless

Six-Figure Sam and Successful Suzy:

  • "We already make a lot of money - we really don't need supplemental income, or a second job."
  • "I already have a great career at a great corporation, with great benefits."
  • "More money = More stuff = more happy."
  • "Keep working these long, long hours. it's for the future of my family, remember? They can get my time later in life."

Mouse In Suit

Never-Ready Ned:

  • "I'm no good with the Internet."
  • "I'm no good at running a business."
  • "I don't know where to start!"

Worrier

Do-it-all Dori, Impatient Irene, Get-Rich-Quick Gary, and Hustleman Horatio:

  • "This is great! I've started network marketing, affiliate marketing, and real estate, all this month! Let's add something else, quick!"
  • "Awesome ideas! I just signed up for everything today! SO... what do you want to buy from me?"

Impatient Mouse

"Been-there-done-that" Ben Donaldson:

  • "Yeah - I tried that before. It didn't work at all."
  • "I know someone who's been doing that for years - don't waste your time or energy."

Been There, Done That

So... why are YOU still in the rat race?

Though we may agree, in theory, that it sure would be nice (or even ideal) to be able to make a living without giving so much of ourselves to a corporate employer... inertia is a powerful thing.

Procrastination. Expectations. Status quo. Doubts. Prestige. Fear. Comfort.

There are lots of reasons for staying in the rat race.

What's your reason? Do you have a great story about this? Share it!
