Will Smith's Key's to Life - Running & Reading

In this video, Will Smith gives a simple but profound award acceptance speech about the keys to life. How does this apply to your getting out of the Rat Race?

Running

Running: The little voice that couldn't.

There's that little voice that finds you, when your guard is down. When you're tired. Aprehensive. Unsure. When you've been knocked down.

We've all experienced that voice. Every time an obstacle crops up. Every time a setback occurs. That voice says: "Quit now. This isn't worth it. Or at least stop and rest." That voice says: "You can't do it. I don't know why. But you can't do it. Let's stop and try something else. No one is watching. The only person you'll let down is yourself."

I haven't been a runner for many years. I see people running out there, and wonder how they can persevere. Wonder where they find the discipline. Wonder how they defeat that little voice in their heads, telling them to quit.

Will Smith's words put my battle with that little voice, into perspective. He gives the issue clarity with simple words, spoken with conviction.

Reading

It seems obvious that we all ought to read more. The thing is - how much of a priority do we place on reading books these days. What with the 9-to-5, kids, school, bills, television, e-mail, and a thousand other things taking up our attention?

If you haven't yet, I'm going to recommend the following books. Pick one up, and get to reading. They will change your entire outlook on at least one thing.

  • Rich Dad, Poor Dad - Robert Kiyosaki.
  • The 4-Hour Work Week - Tim Ferriss.
  • Small is the New Big - Seth Godin.
  • Think & Grow Rich - Napoleon Hill.
  • E-Myth Revisited - Michael Gerber.
  • The Alchemist - Paulo Coelho.
