Ann Sieg's 7 Great Lies of Network Marketing

Ann Sieg

In 2006, Ann Sieg released The 7 Great Lies of Network Marketing.

This to-the-point 35-page report laid bare the very things that most of us HATE about network marketing.

  • The pyramid scheming...

  • The prospecting of family, friends, and anyone WITHIN 3 FEET of a network marketer...

  • The going into debt buying company inventory...

  • Everything.

She also made clear why 97% of network marketers fail. And how to change that.

Ann Sieg points out that the vast majority of us that get involved in network marketing have no foundation in effective sales techniques.

And this is exactly what has caused the prevalence of hype, distortions, myths and downright lies that get passed along from one sponsor to the next.

Ann Sieg's "7 Great Lies of Network Marketing" was written to “deprogram” some the misconceptions that have given the industry a bad name. This 35-page report helped me understand the dark side of the MLM world. And to know what exactly to avoid.

Understanding the pitfalls to avoid is a crucial step towards becoming a highly-effective, well-paid, professional network marketer.

Lie #1 – Everyone is your prospect!

everyone-is-your-prospectThis insane belief has led to such ridiculous practices as the “3 foot rule” and the “when in doubt, blurt it out” technique.

I experienced this personally at a Barnes & Noble bookstore a few years ago. A young lady chatted me up. I thought she was friendly. It turned out she was basically "tricking me" into an invitation to a prospecting meeting.

I accepted the meeting. But was determined to say "NO". Regardless of what the pitch was. I felt betrayed.

Prospecting waitresses, grocery store employees, friends at church, the postman, the McDonalds guy...

Stop it.

There's got to be a better way to find people interested in your business.

No one is worth your time until they've shown an interest in what you're offering, and have asked you for more information.

-- Ann Sieg.

Lie #2 – This really isn’t sales. We just share products with people.

sharing-versus-selling

Totally not true.

If you're talking to people about exchanging goods for money, it's sales.

But because of the attitude taught by many network marketing companies (sharing, not selling)... people are thrown to the wolves totally unprepared to retail their products and their opportunity.

People are set up for failure because they’re given false expectations about how easy this is going to be. Labeling this whole business as “sharing” makes it sound like child’s play.

Learning effective sales techniques is mandatory forsuccess. You have to understand the sales process and what really motivates people.

Lie #3 - Anyone can do this!

funny businessman Not true.

Everyone comes into this game with different advantages and disadvantages. Sales and marketing skills. Team-building skills. Coaching skills. These and others are the largest contributors to network marketing success.

You don't have to have all these skills coming in. But it puts you ahead if you do.

However, if an individual doesn't have TIME, INTEREST, and MONEY to invest in the business - they simply will not succeed.

I occasionally turn prospects down, from joining my team. You should too.

If someone has only 5 hours a week and $50 a month, I’ll tell them it’s honestly not worth it for them until they can free up more time and a little extra cash.
